Caspi is one of Israel's most respected musicians. Caspi has left his mark on every production he had ever been involved in: a combination of technical genius and inner truth.
Caspi has played a significant role in the Israeli music scene for more than three decades. Every undertaking has been met with immediate popular and critical acclaim.
Although he is immensely popular and loved, Caspi never seeks popularity. Instead, he focuses on developing and expressing his "inner truth" through his music. "If I want the audience to believe in what I do, I have to be myself". Because he doesn't write his music down as he composes, Caspi uses his own memory as a gauge for its quality, saying that if he isn't astonished by something, he simply forgets it: "I have never written songs while baring in mind that people ought to like them. Had I done that, I wouldn't have been myself. I write songs that come from deep inside of me, and if I don't find them moving, then I need to forget they ever existed. As long as there are at least two more people that find my work touching, there I have my audience. I cannot disappoint the audience. I cannot write something that is specifically meant to be liked by everyone, using my talent instead of my inspiration." But Caspi's inner focus never leads to insularity. He continually searches for new sounds and combinations. The result being a unique blend of rhythms and melodies, that convey humor, tenderness, romance, joy, cheerfulness and beauty.
The musicologist and researcher Tzipi Fleischer considers Caspi to be the most important creator in the musical field in the last two decades, not just locally, but in global standards as well. "He is the genius among his fellow artists, he sets an important milestone in the history of the music of the world". In her opinion Caspi is yet an important dot in the altitude line stretched from Bach to Gershwin. "Only Caspi has invented his own new musical language. As I sit and analyze his harmonies I find myself amazed all over again each time. The fact that he functions as the performer, arranger and conductor has formed a certain reservedness and introversion, but the truth is that he is a musical wild man. He is the one who promoted sophistication and western standards to the region."
Throughout the years Matti Caspi has founded his own methodology of arrangement and musical development, which is being taught at the universities and in musical academies throughout Israel. The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, for example, offered a course, which was called "From Schubert to Matti Caspi". Caspi himself teaches classes in musical arrangement and production.
"I believe in my music. I have never used hit formulas, nor have I been searching for them. Each one of my songs that became successful made me happy. I know that as long as I remain faithful to myself, the audience will remain faithful to me and I to the audience".
